In 1690 two English Commissioners negotiated peace with the Moghul Emperor, and as its result the cowle for the Madras settlements including "the English factories at Metchlepatam, Madapallam, Vizagapatam, etc., within the territories of the Golconda coutnry" was granted on 28th December 1690 by Zulfikhar Khan, the Moghul General in the Deccan. On a respresentation from the President and Council at Madras in April 1692, the same high official (the Moghul General) permitted the Company to fortify their settlement at Vizagapatam to protech them and their goods against the depredations of the various polygars and theieves.

More European soldiers and ammunition were sent from Madras, the only real work done on the defence seems to have been the construction of "Benyon's battery" & "Middle Point" . In 1744 the Maratha panic revived and estimates were submitted for 'buildig and repairing sundry fortifications namely, "the battery on Dolphin's Nose erroneously called the Dutch Battery, the small battery fornting the fort (near the present flagstaff), the power magazine and the guard house. It was urged that the battery on the Black Rock should be completed."

world war II

In 1942, Visakhapatnam became the site of an important battle of the Second World War. The Japanese conquerred Burma and were advancing into India on the North-East. On the morning of the memorable day of 6th April, 1942, Japanese war planes attacked a number of Allied Ships carrying ammunition into the port of Visakhaptnam. There were no fighter planes of the Allies to give protective cover for the ships. The only defence was the anti-air-craft guns on land, which were ineffective in chasing off these enemy planes. Some of the Allied ships were sunk in the sea off the coast, but two of them managed to escape into the port. They were chased and bombed inside the port. The bombing was so severe that the whole of the town of Visakhapatnam was shaken up. However, the Japanese planes never attacked any civilian targets. The event created a terrible scare among the people of the town who fled to the nearest villages and the whole of the city looked deserted by the next morning. One unexploded bomb Shell of a 250-lb which dropped on Vizag by Japanese can be seen at Visakha Museum
